GREEN GETS FIRST PGA TOUR WIN
From PGATour.com
*
It took five days and 74 holes, but Nathan Green beat a heavily favored Retief Goosen in a thrilling playoff at Glen Abbey.

OAKVILLE, Ontario (AP) -- Nathan Green won the RBC Canadian Open on Monday for his first PGA TOUR victory, beating Retief Goosen with a par on the second hole of a playoff in the rain-delayed tournament.

After Green missed a 12-foot birdie attempt on the par-4 17th, Goosen's 8-foot par try slid right, ending the first Monday finish in the national championship since 1988.

"It's a huge surprise to finally win," said Green, the 34-year-old former Canadian Tour player from Toronto -- Toronto, Australia, that is. "This is where I started my pro career. I love coming up here. The people are great."

In sunny conditions, Green completed a third-round 69 with an eagle on 18 and shot a 68 in the fourth round at saturated Glen Abbey. Goosen three-putted the 18th for par in his morning 67, then eagled the closing hole in the afternoon for a 69.

"It's been bizarre. A long week," Green said a few minutes before another round of hard rain pelted the roof in the media tent.

Goosen had a putt to win on No. 18 on the first extra hole, but missed a 6-foot birdie try after leaving his bunker shot above the hole. Green saved par after his second shot bounced off a cart path, landing near the scoring trailer above the green.

"I dodged a bullet," said Green, who also saved par on the 18th to force the playoff after hitting over the green and into the crowd.

PETTEIT TAKES TORONTO BOWL AND TORURRI CUP GOES TO TORONTO

Toronto claimed the Torurri Cup off Kurri Kurri last week at Cypress Lakes but the Coalfields club still hold a 5-3 lead in the overall head-to-head challenges.

The brainchild of Toronto professional Darren Green, who used to work for Kurri professional Lee "Rowdy" Newman, the Torurri Cup combines around 12 players from each club in fourball and individual events.

"It might be 5-3 but we're on the charge," Green said.

Eight-marker Terry Petteit asked professional Darren Green what was the event on at Toronto Country Club last Saturday.

Green pointed to the Toronto Bowl on the counter in the pro-shop and said: "This is, your name will be on that by the time you finish."

And sure enough it was.

Petteit went around in 75 to win the nett event with 67 and Waratah's Greg McMillan won the scratch event after shooting 73 as a record field of 227 played in the event.

O'REILLY REAPS BENEFIT OF ADDITIONAL PRACTICE
by Neil Goffet - www.theherald.com.au
WORKING HARD: Callan O'Reilly swings into action at Toronto Country Club yesterday.- Picture by Brock Perks TORONTO whiz kid Callan O'Reilly added the Autumn Record to his growing list of amateur titles after a convincing win at Newcastle Golf Club on Sunday.

The 18-year-old shot even-par 72 in the morning to lead the 36-hole scratch event by two strokes.

His 76 in the afternoon was the best second-round total.

O'Reilly beat Alex Edge from the Macquarie Links club by three shots after the Sydneysider had rounds of 74 and 77.

"Cal has been working really hard on his game, so it's good to see him getting some results for all the hard work," Toronto head professional Darren Green said. "He's been doing some work in the shop, and he's always here three and four hours before he starts so he can hit some balls around somewhere.

"His game is really starting to come good. If he keeps working as hard as he is now he should continue to get more results go his way."

O'Reilly defied his youth to perform the key role of No.1 player in a Toronto pennants team that included his father, Tim O'Reilly, this season.

Chasing their first Newcastle District Golf Association pennant since 1991, when Tim was a member of the team, Toronto made the final but lost to Waratah.

The 2007 NDGA junior champion of champions, and winner of last year's NDGA Schoolboys Championship, was one of the stars, losing one match in the entire series.

O'Reilly also followed in the footsteps of his father by winning the schoolboys title after Tim put his name on the trophy in 1979.

"I've been practising a lot lately because I finished school last year and I'm having a year off this year to concentrate on my golf," said O'Reilly, who is working part-time in the pro shop at Toronto.

"I'm out here every day, so I'm either hitting balls or doing some sort of practice almost every day now.

"I just want to play as much as I can this year and get as many good results as I can and hopefully get to play pennants in Sydney next year."

O'Reilly is coached by teaching professional Graeme Stockley at Belmont Golf Club. He started getting some putting tips off Stockley and now he is getting swing coaching as well.

"Graeme has helped me a lot, but there are also guys at Toronto, including my Dad, that have helped my golf," O'Reilly said.

"I'm just trying to work on my game as much as I can. I'm spending a bit less time on the practice range now I'm working in the shop, but I'm still here every day."

GEORGALIS SECURES WARATAH PENNANT OVER TORONTO
JOHN Georgalis's 1-up win over David Alexander gave Waratah back-to-back victories in the Newcastle District Golf Association division one pennant series at Newcastle Golf Club on Sunday.

Toronto were chasing their first pennant title since 1991 and fell behind 3-1 before their in-form club champion Josh Greenwood secured a convincing 4-and-3 win over Mick Browning.

That left two crucial matches still on the course.

Both were close but Georgalis pipped Alexander on the last to grab an unassailable 4-2 lead to get the party started.

The last match between No.1 players Mark Ellison (Waratah) and Callan O'Reilly (Toronto) was square after 18 holes.

Officials decided there was no need for play-off holes to decide the winner of the final match because Waratah had already been declared champions.

"The rules state that the reserve matches don't count in the final anyway, so there was no need for the last two players to have a play-off," NDGA secretary Paul Cortaville said.

"The rain was so heavy at one point we were thinking of calling it off, but the course dried really quickly and the greens were in excellent condition so we were able to keep going."

The first two matches finished at the 17th hole when Toronto's Craig Avery beat Grant Cooper 2 and 1 and Waratah's Terry Blomfield defeated Tim O'Reilly by the same score.

O'Reilly, the father of No.1 player Callan, was the only surviving member of Toronto's previous winning team of 18 years ago.

Toronto opened up a 3-1 advantage courtesy of Greg McMillan's 5-and-4 win over Mick Dundas and Andrew Haigh's 3-and-2 defeat of Robert Smythe

EASTER CHAMPION PUTS TEAM FIRST

* by Neil Goffet - www.theherald.com.au

JOSH Greenwood won the coveted Easter Cup last Friday at Waratah Golf Club, but he would happily swap his individual success for the team trophy on offer in Sunday's district pennant final.

Greenwood beat Toronto teammate Callan O'Reilly and Maitland's Eli Richardson by five shots to claim his first Easter Cup.

The 26-year-old shot an even-par 71 in the first round of the 36-hole Vardon event to trail playing partner O'Reilly by one shot, but he kicked away with a four-under-par 67 in the afternoon.
O'Reilly, who will also line up for Toronto in Sunday's pennant final against defending champions Waratah, had rounds of 70 and 73.

"I drew level with him on the second hole in the afternoon, and then I made birdies at 10 and 12, so that's sort of where I got him," Greenwood said. "It was good, but the boys are more looking forward to the final this Sunday.

"It's probably the biggest thing we've done as a team because we haven't won it since 1991, and I'm not sure if we've even made a final since then.

"We've only got Tim [Callan's father Tim O'Reilly] who is still in the side since the last time Toronto won it."

The pennant final will be played at the Newcastle club this Sunday, and it will continue an amazing return to golf for Greenwood who gave the game away for 18 months.

His stellar junior career included winning the Toronto club championship and the Newcastle district senior title when he was just 16.

He then won six consecutive club championship titles before giving the game away two years ago.

"I got back into it about mid-December last year," Greenwood said.

"I just got a bit sick of it for a while, and then I felt like playing again."

His return was bad news for his fellow A-grade players at Toronto, and their worst fears were confirmed when he won this year's club championship by four strokes.

Greenwood beat head greenkeeper Mick Dundas and O'Reilly, who tied for second, to secure his seventh crown.

He never considered turning professional despite playing state and national tournaments as a junior and is happy to ply his trade as an amateur club golfer.

"No, I never really considered it to be honest," Greenwood said.

"I'm happy just to play around the amateur events."

GREEN SHARES LEAD AT SONY OPEN

*An eagle on the final hole gave American veteran Tom Pernice a share of the lead with Toronto's Nathan Green at the midway point of the US PGA's Sony Open.

The 49-year-old Pernice finished with a 7-under 63 for a two-round total of 8-under 132, tying him with Green (66).

Green didn't have too much excitement except for the fifth hole, when it started raining strongly and he hooked his tee shot toward the hazard. It was one of the few times a player is happy to see a tree in the way, for it allowed him to escape with bogey.

That was the only glitch on an otherwise solid start to his season. And like so many other players, Green considered it a minor victory that he got to play at all considering the forecast.

Nathan Green

"All the news that maybe we wouldn't play had a few of us pretty scared, and that it was meant to blow all day," Green said. "But you get patches out there where it was not really blowing at all. They have the tees forward on a lot of holes. So as long as you get your tee shot in the fairway, you still have a few fair opportunities to make birdie."

DYNAMIC DUNDAS DUO DRIVE TO DISTRICT TITLE

HUSBAND and wife team Mick and Alicia Dundas proved the perfect match on Sunday when they combined to win their first Newcastle District Golf Association mixed foursomes title.
The foursomes championship was played at Toronto Country Club, where Mick is the head greenkeeper and Alicia’s brother. Darren Green, is head professional.
Her other brother is US PGA Tour star Nathan Green, so there was plenty of good golfing pedigree in the husband-and-wife team. They shot 76 in the morning and 80 when the wind started to blow in the afternoon to beat Newcastle pair Nick Turner and Dierdre Brander by three shots.
“It was good fun.” Mick Dundas said. “We played together in the same event two years ago and finished second, and we had a big advantage because we were playing at our home course.
“We enjoyed it and we’ll probably make it a yearly outing now. I’d say we’ll be back next year to defend our title.’
Mick started playing golf as a youngster at Muree and Alicia played her junior golf with her brothers at Waratah.
Having joined Waratah to start his apprenticeship as a greenkeeper, Dundas then moved to The Oaks at Cessnock, where he worked for three years, and he has now been at Toronto for four years.
Alicia had drifted away from golf over the past five years after having sons Jacob, 4, and Ryan, 3, and daughter Emma, 1. “Alicia hasn’t played much golf for the last few years, so she really enjoyed the chance to get out there and have a game,” Mick said.

O'REILLY ADDS NAME AGAIN TO SCHOOLBOYS TROPHY

*CALLAN O’Reilly followed in the footsteps of his father when he survived a three-way playoff to win the Newcastle District Golf Association Schoolboys Championship at Charlestown yesterday. Toronto Country Club member, Tim O’Reilly, was crowned schoolboys champion in 1979, and his 17-year-old son had to work overtime yesterday to put his name alongside his father’s on the trophy.

Callan, a student at St Paul’s High School at Booragul, was joined in the play-off by Clayton Bridges from Belmont High and Maitland High’s Andrew Maniott after rounds of two- over-par 74. It was a three-hole play-off taking in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd holes in an attempt to find a winner.

O’Reilly made par on the first two holes to lead by a shot over Mamott, who had a par and a bogey, while Bridges was out of contention after finding water on the second hole. Mamott had a birdie putt on the 3rd hole to apply the pressure to O’Reilly, but he missed it from two metres away. It would have made little difference because O’Reilly sealed the win in style by sinking his 1 .5m putt for birdie to win by two strokes.

O’Reilly is a member of the NDGA junior representative team and plays his golf at Toronto Country Club.

Edmonds continues his steady evolution

* TORONTO trainee Brett Edmonds has made a strong start to his professional golfing career and won his first trainee tournament at Waratah Golf Club last week.
Edmonds fired a stunning 69 to beat two Sydney trainees by a single shot, which was welcome relief for the 20-year-old, who had gone close several times during his short stint as a professional golfer.
Edmonds struggled to find form last year as an amateur but has turned that around since starting his traineeship under head professional Darren Green at Toronto.
Green, the older brother of US PGA Tour player Nathan Green, has been helping Edmonds with his game since he joined the club in 2003, and the youngster is starting to produce better results.
He joined the professional ranks at the start of the year and finished fourth in his first trainees tournament at Avondale.
He finished in a tie for 11th in his next event, at Wallacia in Penrith and then upstaged many of the top young golfers in Australia by finishing fourth at the prestigious Rich River Classic.
The Rich River event is played over four rounds, and Edmonds finished three under par, just two shots off the pace.
A second placing at Asquith Golf Club on February 25 signalled he was still hitting the ball well.
But he had to wait until the first event in Newcastle before securing his first victory.
The next event on the NSW trainee’s calendar is at Green Hill Golf Club on the Central Coast.

 TORONTO LADIES' OPEN DAY 2006

The annual Toronto Country Club Ladies' Open Day has once again been a great success.

After a week of inclement weather the sun reappeared for the Friday competition. 131 Ladies participated in a Four Person Team 2 Scores to Count Format (try saying that after a couple of chardonnays).

Major Sponsor, Peg Hargreaves Fashions – Beaumont Street Hamilton, along with other sponsors, provided a total of 36 prizes to more than a quarter of the field.

TCC Club Professional Darren Green, was on hand to present the prizes as well as providing his usual strong support with sponsorship of the event.

Overall winners were Toronto's own Eileen Reed and Lexie Budgen, teaming up with M Field and G Morrin of Charlestown.

As usual many of the ladies stayed after the golf to share stories and participate in a relaxing game of Tombola.
