by BY JOSH LEESON - www.theherald.com.au CALLAN O’Reilly’s best performance at a major amateur tournament on the weekend has his confidence sky high leading into the NSW Medal and Amateur Championships tomorrow. The Toronto product finished equal third at the Lake Macquarie Amateur Championship on Sunday at Belmont after carding 67-69-70-72 for a 10-under 278. The result left the 21-year-old five shots adrift of Caboolture winner Daniel Nisbet. It was the best result from a Hunter golfer in the prestigious international event since 2009 when the now Newcastle professional Brendan Smith was a runner-up to Scott Arnold with 276. It was also O’Reilly’s lowest score over 72 holes. ‘‘It’s my best result in one of the big events so far, so I’m very happy,’’ O’Reilly said. ‘‘I was really good off the tee all week and it just made a big difference when you’re always in play giving yourself birdie chances.’’ Yesterday O’Reilly was scoping out the Mona Vale course in preparation for the NSW Medal and Amateur. The Australian men’s ranking event features 72 holes of stroke play at Mona Vale and Long Reef before the top 32 battle it out in match play at Elanora Country Club. After a difficult couple of months on the fairways, the third-place finish at Belmont has O’Reilly buoyant. |
‘‘‘I was going to a few events like the Aussie Amateur, and if you don’t have a result on the board, you’re still doubting, but this weekend has gotten me back into the right frame of mind and showed me I could challenge with the top guys,’’ he said.
Going into the final round O’Reilly was five strokes behind the leader, German Marcel Schneider. The right-hander made a flying start to his final round after he birdied the 10th and 11th holes and then his chip hit the flag stick on the 12th to just miss picking up another shot. A stiff north-easterly breeze made conditions more difficult later in the day and he carded bogeys on the 13th and first for an even round of 72. ‘‘I just didn’t have the same luck on the weekend as I did in the first two days on the greens,’’ he said. Next on the horizon for O’Reilly is the NSW Vardon event, Avondale Medal, from February 10 and then the 54-hole Riversdale Cup in Melbourne from February 16 where he hopes to complete quality finishes to build a case for NSW selection.

LEESON - Newcastle Herald

Toronto's winning Pennant Team:
(back
row): Mick Dundas, David Alexander, Brian
Carmichael, Shane Atkins, Brett Porter, Brian
Williams
(front
row) Tim O'Reilly, Craig Avery, Brent Garde, Callan
O'Reilly, Josh Greenwood (Captain)
TORONTO captain Josh Greenwood said yesterday the
road to breaking the club’s 20-year Newcastle
district A-grade pennants drought began four years
ago.
Toronto won the pennants final 5.5 to 2.5 at
Newcastle on Sunday to claim their first title since
1991 and the second in their history.
Craig Avery, David Alexander, Callan O’Reilly, Mick
Dundas and Brent Garde won their matches, while
Greenwood’s match-up with Mark Ellison was squared.
The victory ended Waratah’s three-year reign in
Newcastle pennants.
Four years ago Toronto stalwart Tim O’Reilly, a
survivor of the 1991 final win, gathered a group of
the club’s best talent together to play skins on a
Tuesday afternoon.
Greenwood credited the regular team practice as the
secret behind their success.
‘‘That put us in the right frame of mind to do what
we did,’’ Greenwood said. ‘‘We were always around
the top pennants sides, but we were just waiting for
some guys to get a bit older and better.’’
Until Toronto’s 4.5 to 3.5 win in round two, Waratah
had not lost a pennants match in three years.
Players like Waratah captain Mick Browning, Ellison,
John Georgalis and Greg McMillan had made the club
the benchmark in Newcastle golf.
‘‘It was good to win but to beat a side as good as
they are made it all that more special,’’ Greenwood
said.
Browning said after last year’s third pennants title
that the biggest hurdle facing Waratah in striving
for a fourth-straight championship would be
motivation.
That analysis proved correct.
‘‘I certainly take my hat off to the Toronto boys in
their keenness and they had a lot of support and
people motivating them through,’’ Browning said.
‘‘That was a big factor because they wanted it more
than us.

* It took five days and 74 holes, but Nathan
Green beat a heavily favored Retief Goosen in a
thrilling playoff at Glen Abbey.
OAKVILLE, Ontario (AP) --
Nathan Green won the RBC Canadian Open on Monday
for his first PGA TOUR victory, beating
Retief Goosen with a par on the second hole of a
playoff in the rain-delayed tournament.
After Green missed a 12-foot
birdie attempt on the par-4 17th, Goosen's 8-foot
par try slid right, ending the first Monday finish
in the national championship since 1988.
"It's a huge surprise to
finally win," said Green, the 34-year-old former
Canadian Tour player from Toronto -- Toronto,
Australia, that is. "This is where I started my pro
career. I love coming up here. The people are
great."
In sunny conditions, Green
completed a third-round 69 with an eagle on 18 and
shot a 68 in the fourth round at saturated Glen
Abbey. Goosen three-putted the 18th for par in his
morning 67, then eagled the closing hole in the
afternoon for a 69.
"It's been bizarre. A long
week," Green said a few minutes before another round
of hard rain pelted the roof in the media tent.
Goosen had a putt to win on
No. 18 on the first extra hole, but missed a 6-foot
birdie try after leaving his bunker shot above the
hole. Green saved par after his second shot bounced
off a cart path, landing near the scoring trailer
above the green.
"I dodged a bullet," said
Green, who also saved par on the 18th to force the
playoff after hitting over the green and into the
crowd.

The annual Toronto Country Club Ladies' Open Day
has once again been a great success. After a
week of inclement weather the sun reappeared for
the Friday competition. 131 Ladies participated
in a Four Person Team 2 Scores to Count Format
(try saying that after a couple of chardonnays).
Major Sponsor, Peg Hargreaves Fashions – Beaumont
Street Hamilton, along with other sponsors, provided
a total of 36 prizes to more than a quarter of the
field. TCC Club Professional Darren Green, was on
hand to present the prizes as well as providing his
usual strong support with sponsorship of the event.
Overall winners were Toronto's own Eileen Reed and
Lexie Budgen, teaming up with M Field and G Morrin
of Charlestown. As usual many of the ladies stayed
after the golf to share stories and participate in a
relaxing game of Tombola. |
